Rock
The Alt scene in music has always had something of a bad reputation surrounding it, whether that be punk in the 1970s, metal in the 1980s/1990s or grunge and emo culture in the 90s and 2000s.
Unfortunately, that reputation seems to be doubled when it comes to Christians playing in those alternative genres, often shunting them to the outskirts. But isn’t that what metal music is? Shelter for the outcasts and a place of expression without judgement?
With bands like Red and Skillet breaking into mainstream charts, the Christian metalcore genre stretches far and wide, a lot further than people expect it to. It even reached a trio of sisters from Jacksonville, Florida and inspired them to practically invent a brand new sub-genre.
GFM started their musical journey around the age of 5.
Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh (GFM) started their musical journey around the age of 5 when they started having music lessons.
Having fallen in love with music they decided to go pro and formed a band together. At first glance they don’t look particularly special, just three girls running around the stage in cheerleading outfits, until they start playing and defy every expectation with heavy hitting distorted guitar riffs and screamed vocals.
When talking about what music they play and the whole concept of Beautycore, youngest sister and drummer Lulu puts it like this, "Metalcore music, but since we're all girls we came up with our own genre, called beautycore. Any band that's heavy but all women. Our whole thing is we are a positive message band, so our music is going to be positive.”
Maggie screams lower than some of the guys we know.
Guitarist and oldest sister CJ added, "Most of 'beautycore' was a joke. We're in the metal industry - male-dominated - and we're wearing cheerleader outfits. I have sparkles, and I love that. But Maggie screams lower than some of the guys we know, so where do we fit? We're just tired of trying to fit in, so we make up our own genre: beautycore.”
Talking about their faith means a lot to them as made clear on their website where there is an entire section devoted to the subject. Bassist and scream vocalist Maggie had this to say when discussing the content of their lyrics, “It's a dark world. It's taken a toll on all of us, but because we have God and we have our salvation, we have the hope and the strength to keep going.”
Solid role models for people.
Personally, I find it ridiculously inspiring that three girls who started their career as teenagers are able to produce such outstanding music and blowing every pre-judgement out of the water, whilst still retaining a strong faith, leading them to be solid role models for people.

As for me? I’m fully on board, #Beautycore for the win!
