British rapper Stormzy has his album ‘Heavy Is the Head’ in the Official Top 100 for over seventy straight weeks. You might have heard his song “Don’t Forget to Breathe” on our xRhythms playlist.
Originally released on the 19th December 2019, it debuted at number two in the chart behind Rod Stewart at number one.
Stormzy discusses his belief quite often in his music, and this release is no different. In the lyrics of “Do Better”, he raps about being saved by Jesus, “But the holy blood of Christ, you don't ever let me down/ Lord knows I'll be back up in minutes and disappear…”
The heavy gospel influences are apparent.
This lyrical message seems to be a continuation of some that can be found in his first album release ‘Gang Signs & Prayers’, specifically the tracks "Blinded by Your Grace" parts 1 and 2. The heavy gospel influences are apparent when supporting the message of being fixed by God despite feeling not worthy.
Stormzy was also given an award in May last year that was presented on June 11th in an online ceremony. He was presented with a Sandford St Martin award for his “contribution to the public understanding of religion.”
Commenting on his methods and why he raps on those topics he said “He’s the reason why I’m here today. He’s the reason that I’m able to have a career… but a lot of the time I get non-believers saying ‘don’t thank God, this wasn’t God. This was all you’, and I know this wasn’t all me. This was God.”
