The Grammy-nominated singer Tori Kelly spoke recently about how her Christian faith helped her overcome insecurities she’d struggled with since childhood.
In a video testimony, as part of the White Chair Film series, the 25-year-old Los Angeles-based artist explained how growing up being told she was an "amazing singer" eventually damaged her. When aged 12, she was dropped from a record label company and struggled with her identity.
She said, “Every executive that I would talk to, there was always some reason they didn't want to sign me. They wanted me to be this outgoing, bubbly personality, which I didn't have, and that's when I really started comparing myself to other people.”
She found her true identity by turning to Jesus Christ.
She explained how she found her true identity by turning to Jesus Christ.
Speaking to young people struggling with finding their true identity, she said in the video, “One day you're going to grow into your own skin and be the person that God uniquely made as you. And you don't have to compare yourself to anybody. I didn't have to change myself; I can just be myself.”
Tori has just released the ‘Hiding Place’ EP, explaining that the inspiration for the project came from verse seven of Psalm 32 in the Bible.
God is her place of safety.
She spoke to the Idolator website recently, discussing how God is her place of safety, where she hides from the "crazy things" life throws at her. This was her motivation throughout the EP.
In recent times, Kelly has duetted with ‘80s and ‘90s pop star Amy Grant and had music written and produced by gospel icon Kirk Franklin.
