Music and ice cream

A wise man once said “Music is like Ice Cream. Everyone has a different favourite flavour.” The more I think about it the more it rings true. When making ice cream you have a basic set of ingredients that you can swap out to do the same thing with something different, you mix it up and combine it to make something, then you add extra things to make it more unique and flavourful. It can be as simple or as complex as you want.

You’re probably thinking “Why is this crazy man talking about making ice cream?” When it comes to music, exactly the same process is followed. You take some basic concepts, like rhythm, chords and groove and swap out different instruments to do the same thing, like swapping a bass guitar for a synthesizer to get a different feel. Once you have the base of the track, you add some main flavour through lyrics and melody and add some flourishes to round it out, like a guitar solo or a slick bass drop, to create a final product.

Everyone has favourite genres/artists.

There is no universal favourite flavour when it comes to ice cream. Everyone has a different favourite flavour, and flavours have various popularity. Again, the same thing happens in music: everyone has favourite genres/artists, and some genres are more popular than others. However, it seems to be highly contentious when it comes to differing opinions regarding music.

One of those that I’m more familiar with is “Metal sucks, it’s just noise!” This really is a non-argument because all music is noise, without noise music does not exist, but unfortunately, that doesn’t help dissolve the intent behind the comment.

And it doesn’t stop with genre either. One of the biggest music debates in the past two decades has been Beyoncé vs Rhianna. I have seen many arguments between people about who is better than the other, some getting quite heated. They are both incredibly skilled and talented, each bringing their own unique flavour to the music they release.

Just remember: everyone likes different flavours.

Why is such a thing so controversial? Why is it so hard to accept that people like different things for different reasons? This needs to stop. Pitting creators against each other needs to end, and celebrating when different artists collaborate needs to be celebrated so much more! Just remember: everyone likes different flavours.
