The rise of K-pop is reaching extraordinary heights. With BTS making number one in the British charts and selling out concerts at Stade De France and Wembley Stadium set for June, the whole world is seemingly becoming excited by the pop scene of South Korea.
One thing that the international media is only now beginning to recognise is the large number of Christians there are in many K-pop groups.
Rose from Blackpink is a Christian.
For instance, Rose from Blackpink is a Christian. Blackpink made their UK album and singles chart debut this month with 'Kill This Love' while their video for 'Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du' has become the most viewed K-pop video in YouTube history.
Many top-selling K-pop groups contain Christians. Groups like Miss A, Shinee, Nu’Est, Shinhwa and TVXQ have believers in their lineups and Wonder Girls and Super Junior are all-Christian groups.
29% of South Korea's population are Christians.
The entertainment media is a little surprised by this but they shouldn’t be. At the last survey around 29% of the population of South Korea were church-going Christians and in the country’s capital Seoul there is the Yoido Full Gospel Church (Assemblies of God) with a staggering membership reported to be 830,000 believers.
Clearly a vibrant pop scene and the Christian faith can exist side-by-side.
