Sadly, there is some cultural stereotyping still prevalent in the world of music.
The truth is, if you’re a singer with white skin, the DJs, journalists, and record companies are likely to call you a “pop artist”. While if you are black, you are going to be pigeon-holed R&B or gospel.
This strange situation becomes particularly apparent when you listen to the music of Isa Agape, who currently has two songs, 'Destiny' and 'Song For Mom', on the xRhythms playlist.
Isa’s sound is pure pop, maybe with a slight trace of country. Yet, being an African-American born and raised in Philadelphia, she has often been saddled with a “gospel singer” label.
Early recordings built a following for her well-crafted music.
Singer, songwriter, photographer, and blogger, Isa currently lives in Kerrville, Texas. Early recordings such as the EPs ‘Rend The Heavens’ and ‘Of Love And War’, and the album ‘Isa: In The Waiting’, released under her full name of Isa Couvertier, built a following for her well-crafted music.
In 2015 she recorded the album ‘Crazy Love’ to raise funds for the poor of Nicaragua. But then, after 10 years of performing, recording, and leading worship, she took a two-year sabbatical.
She has now returned with a new name. She said in her biography, “Sometimes we forget our own right name on purpose... To forget is the only way to avoid the gravity of a passion that immortal hands have sewn into the lining of the heart.
A spark lit up in me to go back to my love for music and creativity.
"It wasn’t until going to a Paramore concert that a spark lit up in me to go back to my love for music and creativity. I realized that when things don’t go as planned, the pain and disappointment of that doesn’t have to put an end to your dreams."
Following her break, she now desires to write songs that are real, honest, and true; that will help people be at peace and come in contact with love.
