Environment
Today is World Environment Day and this glorious day exists for us to remember to take environmental action.
It started in 1974 by the United Nations and it runs every year on the 5th of
June. The platform was developed to raise awareness on environmental issues such as:
- Air pollution
- Global warming
- Wildlife crime
- Sustainable consumption
- Sea-level increase
The day is hosted by a different country every year, and this year Pakistan is hosting it with a focus on Ecosystem Restoration.
'Ecosystem Restoration' is not a very common term to hear among social circles, but it's all about reviving, renewing, and restoring damaged or destroyed ecosystems and habitats. Repairing large areas of land so people have access to food, clean water, and jobs.
In simple terms, it means bringing back plants and environments where animals can live well. Going from exploiting nature, to healing it.
Ecosystem Restoration is not just reserved for large scale operations, we can actually contribute our part to it through our everyday actions. I'm a firm believer that if everyone plays their little part it'll add up to a massive difference.
Making small changes means we can repair large areas so people can have access to food, clean water, and more jobs created.
So, for this year, you can help restore the ecosystem by actively doing one thing: Planting trees.
Now I'm not telling you to go into your back garden and start planting a tree. I mean, you could if you really wanted to? But this is more supporting organisations that are actively planting trees in countries and areas that need it the most.
Did you know that you can plant trees by studying, drinking tea, and searching online?
Plant trees by: Studying
Using an app like Forest to help you stay focused when revising actually helps you plant trees. The Forest company partners with real-tree planting organisations to plant trees around the world.
The more you use the app, the more coins you will earn. And as you earn and spend the coins on the app, the Forest team will donate money to their partners and create planting orders.
Plant trees by: Drinking tea
You've probably had the debate of PG tips vs. Yorkshire Tea before. But fun fact, Yorkshire Tea actually partnered with the Woodland Trust to send tree-planting packs to schools around the UK. They also have projects to plant trees in Kenya.
The focus was to help the younger generation engage with nature and look after the environment. Pretty beautiful if you ask me.
Plant trees by: Searching online
You can use websites such as Ecosia instead of Google when looking online. Their motto is "Search the web to plant trees" and they donate around 80% of their profits to non-profit organisations that focus on reforestation. How cool is that!
So, how are you going to plant a tree today?
