Learning to prioritise

These past few months have been exhausting! I have been through changes with my job, personal life and changes in my spiritual life. I feel like a juggler who has that many things going on I can’t take my eye off the ball for a second or everything will come crashing down.
I have been thinking a lot about how I prioritise in life and about the things that are important to me: my family, friends and church.
This is an interesting process because you learn what is important to you and how much you are willing to do for it.
We see loads of examples of this in the media. ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ is basically a bride trying desperately to convince her family and friends that the dress she wants is the greatest dress on planet earth, and it gets dramatic. The tears pour and the insults fly, but ultimately the family and friends just want the bride to be happy.
There are also survival shows with Bear Grylls. Some of the moments where Bear is eating the unimaginable you just want to turn the telly off. The idea though is that Bear is showing you what lengths he will go to in order to survive in harsh environments.
So what counts as a harsh environment? I feel like sometimes people joke about where they are from and there is always a ‘rough end’ and a ‘posh end’ of every street. I think that everywhere can be harsh and everywhere can also be beautiful.
We will always have to make difficult choices in order to keep doing the things we love doing.
My point is that despite where we live and how many things we have to deal with, we will always have to make difficult choices in order to keep doing the things we love doing. Whether that decision be to not play on the Xbox and go out with our best friends. You could also have to not study something you love because you need certain qualifications for college. That’s a hard choice to make and you have to think about the long term.
If we are thinking about the long term and thinking about sacrifice, I can’t help but think about some of the people I learnt about as a young person in school.
Florence Nightingale sacrificed her time and energy to create modern day nursing. Martin Luther King fought tirelessly for the civil right movements.
So many people have given so much to form the world we see today.
These people have impacted my life and I have never met them. There are probably a number of people alive today who inspire people and have no idea about it.
I am in a position where children look up to me. This is a huge honour, but also it’s a challenge because I know that I am representing my faith, but I also know that I am very human and I make loads of mistakes.
As I was thinking about the idea of people who sacrifice for what is important I naturally thought about the crucifixion of Jesus for our sins. This was the ultimate sacrifice, but it was a sacrifice that God was willing to make for what he cared about the most. You and me.
Simply knowing that makes me feel like I can keep on juggling all of the things that happen in my life and make the right decisions when it comes to prioritising what matters most. I hope that you can too.
